About Zentangle

How Zentangle® Got Its Start

Maria Thomas, a renowned calligraphy artist and entrepreneur of a custom stationary and design company was relating to her partner, Rick Roberts, an experience she had while drawing background patterns on a manuscript she was creating.  She described her feelings of timelessness, freedom, well-being and complete focus on what she was doing with no thought or worry about anything else.

Rick Roberts, a former monk and a person of multiple overlapping endeavors:  printer, flute designer and maker, photographer, recording artist, writer, lifeguard, New York City cab driver, financial analyst and investor said, "You're describing meditation."

From this interchange Rick and Maria wondered if they could create a simple system so others
might enjoy a similar experience; and so began the journey towards discovering this simple
and elegant system called Zentangle.

People who know Rick and Maria have been known to say,
"He's Zen, she's Tangle."  Their motto is "anything is possible, one stroke at a time".

Neither Rick nor Maria feel the creation of Zentangle would have come to either of them individually. They consider Zentangle their “baby” and they are passionate about its
growth and development.
